Virtual tour 11 - Dugout experience

The dugout that was reconstructed in the museum includes a few bunks, a dining area, an officer’s mess, a workshop and an aid post, the last which was not often seen in an underground shelter. Further into the reconstruction, you can find a pump room, latrines, a kitchen and a few other types of dugouts at the end. Excrement was carried out in buckets from the latrines because cesspits couldn’t be dug at that depth. The kitchen was of great importance. Food was usually prepared far behind the frontlines, but whenever transporting it became difficult, field kitchens sometimes did the job closer to the front.
